Raíces of Resilience: Thriving, Healing, and Sembrando Semillas of Cultural Identity

Students are the center of Ventura College’s HSI identity. This event will support and empower students to increase their knowledge of servingness and guide VC’s capacity to better serve its students, particularly those from Latine/@/x and historically minoritized backgrounds. Students will engage collaboratively with peer leaders, staff, faculty, and administrators in transformational and healing activities while centering resiliency and their cultural roots.

This speech will inspire participants to reimagine holistic wellness and innovation in education, career, and community by integrating ancestral wisdom, cultural healing practices, and equitable frameworks.

Resilience and Renewal: Transformación Through Community, Collaboration, and Intentional Practices

This year’s summit comes at a time of significant growth, momentum, and transformation for our campus community. As we navigate the opportunity for renewal, we remain resilient and committed to enacting a serving-minded community through collaboration and empowerment. Join colleagues in collective care, learning, and interactively sharing best practices to serving our students, and each other.

Mental Health Impact of Transformación on Staff and Faculty at HSIs

Keynote: Adriana Alejandre, LMFT

Founder of Latinx Therapy, trauma psychotherapist, podcaster, and nationally recognized mental health advocate

An interactive 45-minute discussion on systemic challenges staff and faculty at Hispanic Serving Institutions face and how these challenges impact the mental health of not only the staff and faculty, but also the students they serve. This talk will include an exploration of cultural factors that influence our communication style, how the transformation process connects with accountability, compassion fatigue, and burnout and its impact on the nervous system. Recommended strategies to create a culturally attuned environment during change with an emphasis on mental health will be shared.

Practical tools and a co-regulation exercise will be implemented to model collective care that staff and faculty could utilize on their own or with their students. A Q&A will follow this talk. Resources connected to the topic will be shared.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) announces National Hispanic Serving Institutions Week to be observed September 9-15, 2024. The observance takes place during National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated Sept. 15 - Oct. 15.

HACU-member HSIs are encouraged to observe the week with campus activities to heighten awareness of the important role HSIs play in improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.
